Canon Powershot SD890 IS Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 10.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot SD890 IS Digital ELPH ($399) is the "big zoom" model in this popular series of ultra-compact cameras. It features a 5X optical zoom lens, with a focal range of 37 - 185 mm, which is considerably more than you'll find on most cameras in this class. Other features include a 10 Megapixel CCD, optical image stabilization, a 2.5" LCD display, and lots of point-and-shoot features. ...
... Photo quality was very good in most situations. The SD890 generally took well-exposed photos, with pleasing, vivid colors. Sharpness was "just right", save for the corners, which can sometimes be blurry (a common issue on compact cameras). Images are nearly noise free through ISO 400 in good light, though low light performance wasn't nearly as impressive. ..."

| Review (Summary): "The Canon SD890 IS is a 10 megapixel point-and-shoot camera that features a 5x optical zoom lens equipped with Canon's image stabilizer that actually shifts the lens elements when movement is detected to help avoid blurry images. In addition to the basic point-and-shoot features found on other cameras the Canon SD890 IS also offers adjustments to sharpness, contrast, and saturation as well as a bevy of color options ranging from emphasizing certain colors to lightening or darkening skin tones. ...
... Overall, the Canon SD890's lens is quite good, delivering sharp images with less softening in corners than other compact models. In fact, the softening was generally confined to extreme corners only. Kudos to Canon for incorporating a high quality lens into a compact camera. The Canon SD890 IS's image stabilizer worked very well and I was able to easily capture sharp images at 1/60th of a second-a shutter speed I usually don't dare try to handhold under any conditions, even when I haven't been buzzed out on caffeine. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "The SD890 IS is actually a little lighter than the Nikon Coolpix P60 I tested recently, but it's also far more compact, so the weight (about 5.5 ounces, body only) is more noticeable. And at 2.3 by 3.8 by 1.1 inches (HWD), the SD890 IS is small enough to tote around easily. Yet the camera strikes a nice balance between size and comfort, as it's big enough to hold easily without being too bulky. ...
Thanks in large part to a generous feature set and good picture quality, the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS holds its own among compact cameras. Still, there's no getting around the high $400 price tag. ..." |
